What Is Sciatica?

Sciatica is a specific type of radiculopathy (radiating nerve pain).  The term sciatica refers to the pain that runs along the sciatic nerve.

The sciatic nerve is the longest and thickest nerve in the body and extends from the low back, through the hips and buttocks and down the leg.

What Causes Sciatica?

When the sciatic nerve gets pinched, compressed, irritated, or inflamed, this results in pain that generally extends from the buttocks or glute down the leg. Depending on the extent of the nerve injury, the pain can extend as far down as the feet and toes.

Sciatic pain is most often caused by a herniated disc putting pressure on the sciatic nerve. To learn more about herniated disc pain, click here

There are several conditions that can cause sciatic nerve irritation as a result of a narrowed spinal space through which the nerve must pass. Some of these conditions include the following:

  • Osteoarthritis
  • Degenerative disc disease
  • Spinal stenosis
  • Spondylolisthesis
  • Vertebral misalignment
  • Spinal compression
  • Bone spurs
  • Scoliosis
  • Bulging discs
  • Herniated discs

Other causes of sciatica may include the following:

  • Limited core strength
  • Diabetes
  • Smoking
  • Prolonged sitting
  • Strenuous work
  • Heavy lifting

What Are The Symptoms Of Sciatica?

Sciatic pain is generally characterized by an intense shooting pain that extends from the low back to the buttocks and down into the leg. Depending on the severity of the case, the pain can extend all the way to the calf, feet or toes.

While your sciatic nerves run from the low back down each of your legs, most often sciatica is only experienced in one leg at a time. The pain can radiate and be felt throughout the entire length of the sciatic nerve, or the pain can be localized to one or a few regions of the nerve.

This pain can feel different for each person. Some people report a mild ache while others experience a sharp or burning pain. Numbness and tingling are also common along with what some would describe as an “electric jolt” of pain.

In the most severe cases, patients may experience muscle weakness, loss of bladder and/or bowel control, and drop foot.

Can Piriformis Syndrome Cause Sciatica?

The piriformis is a small muscle located in your buttock, behind the gluteus maximus and directly over your sciatic nerve.

Piriformis syndrome occurs when this muscle gets too tight, spasms, and/or swells as a result of some type of injury or irritation. When this occurs, the sciatic nerve can also become irritated, leading to sciatic pain.

How Is Sciatica Treated?

If your sciatica does not resolve on its own within a couple of weeks or is getting worse, it may be time to seek medical treatment.

There is no need to suffer for months on end just waiting for the pain to subside. If your sciatic pain is affecting your quality of life, then it is time to get help.
