Common Causes of Headaches & Migraines

According to the World Health Organization, headaches and migraines are one of the most common disorders of the nervous system and are rarely diagnosed properly by healthcare providers. Those suffering from debilitating headaches or migraines are often sent home with prescription medications that do nothing to resolve the underlying cause and only mask the symptoms, leaving you worried about when the next episode will strike.

Head pain and migraines can be triggered by a variety of factors. Some of these factors include:

  • Limited neck range of motion
  • Muscle tension and tightness
  • Muscle imbalances
  • Chronic and excessive use of medications
  • Sinus issues
  • Concussions
  • Whiplash
  • Spinal imbalances
  • Cranial imbalances
  • Habitual positional strain of the neck and head
  • Hormonal changes
  • Diet and food additives
  • Alcohol and smoking
  • Stress
  • Fatigue
  • Sensory stimuli (heavy perfume or bright lights)

What Are The Symptoms Of A Migraine?

Migraines can cause a wide range of symptoms and are characterized by a severe and disabling headache and pulsing sensation. It can be accompanied by nausea, vomiting, and sensitivity to light and sound. Symptoms can last anywhere from a few hours, to several days and are generally aggravated by routine physical activity. The intense and steady ache can affect one side of the head, or both sides. Also, it can alternate between sides of the head. Although not always, migraines can progress through 4 stages:

Prodrome: this stage generally occurs a day or two before the actual migraine pain. Subtle changes such as food cravings, constipation, mood changes, fatigue and neck stiffness can indicate that a migraine is coming.

Aura: the aura stage can occur right before or during the migraine and is characterized by visual disturbances such as bright spots or flashes of light, temporary loss of vision, tingling in arms, legs, or face. Difficulty speaking could also occur.

Attack: this is the stage in which the migraine itself occurs. It can last a few hours to a few days and results in severe pain in the head, vision impairment, sensitivity to light and sounds, and nausea or vomiting.

Postdrome: this stage occurs after the brunt of the migraine has passed. Some people may still have a mild headache during this stage and may also have feelings of fatigue, apathy, or euphoria.

It’s important to note that migraines are experienced differently by each person. They can vary in length and in symptoms. People will experience different intensities of each stage, and some people may not experience all the stages.
